How To: Solve Coin Word Problems

Carlos has three quarters, two nickels, and three
pennies. How much money does he have?

This is a tough one, but I know you can solve it!
Let's solve it together!
**Don't forget your coin bag!

  1. Don't get confused or overwhelmed with all of the words!
  2. Take out three quarters from your bag. How much is each quarter worth?
  3. I hope you said 25 cents!
  4. If each quarter is worth 25 cents, then three quarters equals?
  5. Yes, 75 cents! Write 75 cents on a piece of paper!
  6. Now take out two nickels from your coin bag. How much is a nickel worth?
  7. Yes! 5 cents!
  8. If each nickel is worth 5 cents, then two nickels must be 10 cents!
  9. Lets write 10 cents on the piece of paper as well.
  10. 75 cents plus 10 cents? What's that?
  11. Yes! 85 cents! You're so smart!
  12. We're not done yet. We still have three pennies.
  13. Each penny is worth 1 cent.
  14. If we have 85 cents already, let's just add 3 cents to it.
  15. 86..87...88!! 88 is the final answer!
  16. YES! WE SOLVED THE PROBLEM!
